Glossary

High School Band comes with a whole new set of terms, and it can get confusing quickly if you don’t understand what these terms mean. For clarity’s sake, the most common terms are listed below, with definitions, descriptions, examples, and where applicable, links attached.

  • An Accompanist is an individual who plays the piano, providing the background music for a student's individual performance

  • Ensembles comprised of high school students selected through the audition process that represent the best musicians throughout the state

  • Process that requires students to learn and perform a pre-selected piece, or pieces of music in order to try out for different ensembles

  • End of school year celebration where students, staff, and parents are recognized for their contributions and achievements during the academic year

  • Parent organization that works to support and promote the LLHS Tiger Band program

  • A period of time in late July through early August where band students report for all-day rehearsals that provide an opportunity for intensive learning and practicing of the marching show, as well as team building for new and returning band members

  • Group of students elected by their peers who help to plan and execute different activities

  • Student membership fee that covers the bare minimum of expenses necessary to run a successful music program

  • Traditional high school achievement award given for meeting pre-determined requirements of participation and service in the LLHS Tiger Band program

  • Band students elected by their peers to represent them on the Band Council

  • Appointed student leaders who are responsible for different sections of the band

  • Group of students who perform choreographed routines with various props, including flags, to help interpret the music of a marching show

  • Formal events where marching bands perform in order to receive constructive feedback, and recognition for their efforts

  • Time period from late November through May of each academic year where students focus on learning and performing ensemble music indoors

  • Similar to All-State, this ensemble is comprised of high school students selected through the audition process that represent the best musicians throughout the district

  • Students, who are selected through an audition process, that conduct the band during marching season.

  • Group of students who play snare drum, bass drum, and tenor drums

  • Group of student musicians who perform together

  • Scores received as a result of competing in various marching band competitions

  • Time period that stretches from late July through early November when marching bands rehearse, perform, and compete

  • Competition-like performance during Concert season where bands perform and receive feedback from professional music educators

  • Group of student musicians who play contemporary music at football and basketball games, as well as school assemblies and other events

  • Also known as the ‘Front Ensemble’ this is a group of students who play all percussion instruments aside from snare drum, bass drum, and tenor drums during marching season. They are found on the sideline of the marching field

  • Group of parent volunteers who help students move equipment on and off the field before and after every performance and competition

  • Empty parking lot purposely reserved for marching band practice that- in addition to parking stripes- has been striped like a football field

  • Student who, through the audition process, is ranked as first in each section of the band

  • Private rehearsal for a specific group of students who play the same instrument

  • Slang for ‘Marching Show’, the pre-planned and choreographed musical marching performance by students

  • Commemorative t-shirt that lists the name of the year’s marching show, and the list of student participants

  • Similar to the MPA performance, students perform in small groups or individually for feedback on their skills from a professional music educator

  • Similar to Color Guard, this is a group of students who perform choreographed routines with various props, including flags, to help interpret a specific selection of music

  • Class that takes place before the official start of the school day
